You Got Served, For Real…Now What?
You got served….
A sheriff shows up at your house and hands you a stack of papers…I know what you’re thinking, “how could this be happening?”
This could mean that you got served with a lawsuit. Contact an attorney immediately. In Illinois, you only have 30 days to respond to the lawsuit or you could potentially have a judgment entered against you. After judgment, your wages could be garnished, your property could be sold at auction, or your credit could be destroyed.
You may have defenses to the lawsuit that will be compromised if you don’t respond on time or appropriately. Many people think they “can’t afford” to call an attorney. However, can you afford to have your wages garnished for the next ten years while your creditor collects debt and related fees that you maybe don’t even owe? My opinion is, speak with an attorney as soon as you can. It is better to be safe, than to be sorry.
